Yukio Tanaka è un ragazzo di 14 anni già stanco della sua vita, decisamente noiosa e priva di eventi straordinari. Frequenta la scuola media assieme all'amico Tanabe, il quale si diverte come può fotografando le compagne di scuola durante le lezioni di nuoto.
Un giorno tornando da scuola, Yukio salva uno stranissimo cane di nome beck, da un gruppo di ragazzini di strada. Ha un aspetto decisamente inquietante viste le numerose cicatrici che ricoprono il suo corpo.
Il suo padrone è Minami Ryusuke, ragazzo sedicenne appena tornato dall'America dove ha suonato come chitarrista con la band The Dying Breed. I due diventeranno presto grandi amici e Yukio imparerà a conoscere il mondo della musica.
Con l'aiuto di Taira Yoshiyuki (basso), Chiba Tsunemi (voce) e Yuji Sakurai (batteria), i nostri fonderanno una band underground chiamata BECK (Mongolian Chop Squad negli Stati Uniti).
La vita di Yukio da qui in poi cambierà…
